“Constanze, please introduce yourself.”

"Hi! My name is Constanze Saemann and I was born and raised in Germany. When I was 17 I first moved overseas to pursue my modeling career and it has continued since then, traveling almost full time and living between Paris and New York. However, I recently moved back to Berlin! Throughout my earlier years, I really found working and the industry all-consuming and very intense - so I decided I needed to balance my time and channel my energy into something I was passionate about. So I began to study aromatherapy and natural perfumery, mostly online but also in some cities when I was on longer stays. And from that BASIUM was born!"

“You recently captured a story for Basium Fragrances x Faithfull The Brand with your partner and film photographer, Ryan Brabazon – what did you both love most about the countryside of Tuscany?”

"I personally loved all the wild Mediterranean herbs growing everywhere that you could freely pick and we also loved to discover and explore the ancient castles and villages that are scattered throughout the countryside."

“What was the inspiration behind Basium Fragrances?”

"All of my life I have tried to commit to an all-round organic lifestyle that includes the products that I used for on body, and I really found it impossible to find a perfume that was sustainably made without using synthetic ingredients and wasn't overpowering. So I decided to make my own that filled that void. Also in the past years, I have been fortunate enough to travel to some incredible countries that are home to some very unique botanicals and learn all about other cultures and their beauty rituals which has been a great inspiration for me. And personally I wanted to inspire and encourage people through BASIUM to consume less, more mindfully and understand where their products are from."

“We’d love to know about your process behind dreaming up a scent, to seeing this come to life. How long have you been working on the products we see today and sourcing your natural ingredients?”

"It’s been quite a journey! I had the idea originally to create unique and natural smelling perfumes a few years ago and finally, I came up with 'Beau', which is grounding, woody and earthy, and 'Flora' - fresh, floral, and citrusy. I began making them all by hand at home and I eventually got to the point when I was genuinely happy with them and received good feedback ( and sampled them on everyone I knew! :) ), I followed the same route with the body oil and face mask which came after. I have now moved the production out of my living room and we are having them carefully produced in a certified artisanal laboratory in the UK using the same recipes and ingredients that I concocted!"

“Do you have a morning ritual with Basium?”

"Since it’s summer in Europe at the moment, I use 'Flora' perfume and 'Luce' body oil in the morning to start my day with uplifting scents. And when I feel like I need to slow down and reconnect, I usually make myself a cup of herbal tea and put the terra face mask on, because of it's key ingredient turmeric, it gives my skin a healthy glow and makes me feel fresh again. For now, I am saving Beau as my winter scent, which is just around the corner :)"

“What is your favourite product from your latest range and why?”

"I love the Luce Body oil. I’ve spent a lot of time in India and Sri Lanka over the past years and oils play such a big role in the Ayurvedic treatments there. Inspired by this, I created my own soothing blend that is uplifting, light, and a perfect accessory for summer."
