Travel: The French Riviera Guide

We travelled to the luxe Mediterranean coastline of France for Spring 20.

This is our visual Travel Diary with our top 5 of what to see, do, wear, eat and stay, as well as our favourite moments in between during our time exploring Le Riviera

“Make time to see & experience”

On the rare occasion we had a moment to catch our breath, we would embark on a stroll down to the ocean shoreline and simply take in the breathtaking sea and sparkling sunshine, watching all the beautiful people enjoy their hot summers afternoon. We were luckily enough to stay within 10 minutes walk to the beach of Nice, which saw us stroll through bustling alleyways filled with incredible restaurants and colourful buildings.

The main beachside promenade is also a perfect backdrop for a morning run, or early stroll when the streets less frantic. Be sure not to miss Old Town, where you will find cute hidden gems on every turn. If you have time, plan a day trip to Villefrance-sur-mer, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferra or Cannes to explore the city outskirts and find your own slice of paradise.

“What to Eat & Drink”

We were honestly quite surprised at the cuisine offered in Nice, as it was somewhat more International than French. Nonetheless, we embarked on small-scale food safari during our time spent in the Riviera - continuing to taste the best pasta, seafood and vino we could get our hands on.

For a healthy lunch fix (after 1 too many carb dishes) - we highly recommend Paper Plane. We frequented this lunch destination during our shooting days, as it was one of only a handful of vegan & vegetarian friendly restaurants we could find. Also, the food was hands down some of the most delicious vegan food we have tasted. Recommend for a quick Breakfast or Lunch.

A reservation at Le Plongeoir, Nice is a must - however, we recommend booking quite early, as they are usually booked out months ahead. Unfortunately this trip we were unable to acquire a table, but this is now at the top of our must-visit list the next time we make our way to Nice.

For Dinner reservations, we also recommend booking ahead. "Wrap Dinner" as we like to call it, is usually a very special dinner. It is when the crew can let their hair down and basically hype eachother up about how beautiful the film is going to come back. We chose Franchin, a cute little restaurant in the middle of town that was the perfect backdrop with a very french feeling. The food and wine was INCREDIBLE - and the perfect spot to wind down the evening and say bon-voyage to our team.

“Things to Do”

European Summer is meant to be a time of relaxation. So typically "doing" usually means lazing under the sun, drinking prosecco on the rocks with a hand-made cheese platter served in a picnic basket. Seemingly, this was not our French Riviera escape, but we did stumble across an incredible vintage store - which to us Faithfull girls, is as precious of an experience as cheese & wine.

Don't let the name fool you, Hippy Market Vintage is a quaint little store, hidden in a small alley in the middle of the Old Town. Spend some time going through their racks of denim, print and leather - and you may just walk out with a little french vintage treasure for a steal price.

If you are lucky enough to be in Nice on a Monday - you can't miss their local Vintage Market, Cours Saleya. We ventured into the market early to start our hunt for some key props needed for our shoot - and walked out 3 hours later with no arms to spare. Cours Saleya felt very authentic, selling items ranging from old french vases, to beautiful fresh flowers, to delightful french coffee table books and collectable vinyl. If you are on the fence of when to stay in Nice, we would highly recommend to ensure you are in town for this incredible Monday market.

“Highlight: Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild”

While planning our Campaign, our Directors fell in love with the backdrop of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild for its colourful & femme tone palette, and beautifully rich landscape. We were over the moon when given the chance to shoot here. Lucky for holiday-makers, entry to Villa Ephrussi is as easy as buying a ticket on entry that will grant you 1 full days access to explore as you desire. We recommend arriving early to avoid peak crowds.
