An LA vacation with Lucy Brownless

Long summer days, palm-lined streets and a coastline made for sunset drives. We join Lucy Brownless in Los Angeles to discover her favourite local spots, the FAITHFULL pieces in her suitcase and the little moments that make a summer spent in LA so special.

Where are you waking up in LA, and how does your ideal morning begin?

I'm sleeping in! There's nothing I love more than not setting an alarm and waking up naturally when I feel rested.

From there, I'm making the most of a slow hotel morning. I'll order my hot lemon water and a cappuccino to the room, do a guided meditation, throw on a dress (it's still so warm here!) and head downstairs for breakfast by the pool.

What's on the itinerary today?

I've spent quite a bit of time in LA, so it's always so nice coming back to my favourite little spots.

I love starting my morning with a matcha from Muro! Brentwood Country Mart is one of my favourite places to spend a morning. I'll grab a juice, wander through Goop, and usually end up having a few tacos from the mexican place in the courtyard.

For shopping, I love Shop RLT. I'll stop by Erewhon across the road to stock up on some goodies. I also found the perfect pair of light-wash vintage Levi's at American Rag.

Food-wise, I can never go past a bagel from Courage Bagels or the Chinese chicken salad from Joan's on Third.

And I absolutely love driving out to Malibu along the coastline. There's really nothing quite like it, especially around sunset.

Talk us through your FAITHFULL looks. What are you wearing from AM to PM in LA?

I'm such a dress girl, so naturally I'm obsessed with both of my Faithfull dresses. I love pieces that are effortless to throw on during the day but can easily transition into the evening. I'll usually swap my sandals for a little kitten heel and throw on a leather jacket.

I've also been loving the check shirt. It's starting to get a little cooler in the mornings and evenings here, so it's the perfect easy layer. It's also such a great piece for travelling, which I love!

What are your go-to styling tricks when travelling?

Keep it simple! I've been streamlining my wardrobe over the last couple of years, focusing on buying pieces I genuinely love and know I'll wear again and again. It's made packing for travel so much easier because I naturally gravitate towards my most-loved pieces that are practical but still feel chic.

My travel essentials are always a pair of comfortable black pants, a trench coat, a cashmere knit to keep cozy (especially on planes) and some really great basics.

I'm the same with accessories. I'll usually only pack a few good pairs of shoes and bags that I know will work with everything.

Of course, there's always a little room in my suitcase to pick up something special along the way! Being able to pull something out of your wardrobe years later and say, 'Oh, I bought that in Paris!' I love how clothing can hold beautiful memories of places and moments in time.

You also founded Love Letters, your photo booth business. How did the idea come about, and what inspired you to bring it to life?

My boyfriend and I were actually inspired by the idea while travelling in New York last year. We fell in love with the concept of creating something tangible, a little keepsake you can hold onto and treasure. In a world where everything feels so digital, there was something really special about bringing back that nostalgic feeling of printed photos.

We launched Love Letters at the very end of last year, and we now have three locations across Australia, with a couple more in the works!

I love that we're creating little memories for people to take home.

What little moments do you find yourself photographing when you travel?

I've always loved photography, particularly film, and I've naturally found myself documenting my travels over the years. Sometimes it's to share with others, but more often it's to have those memories for myself. I love capturing the little everyday details, whether it's scenery shots, an outfit I've put together, or candid moments of loved ones I'm travelling with. It's often these little snapshots that become my favourite memories to look back on.

If you could keep one photo strip from this day in LA, what moments, and who, would be in it?

This trip to LA has been a solo one, which I've really loved.

I think it's so important to spend time with yourself every now and then. I always find that travelling alone opens you up to meeting new people, having unexpected experiences and learning a little more about yourself along the way.It also gives me the space to slow down, reflect and just enjoy my own company.

So I think my photo strip would be a collection of those little moments throughout the day. A little reminder of a beautiful day spent in my own company. <3
